A Vintage Italian Ceramic Bough Pot

A delightful italian ceramic bough Pot. Pleasing yellow and green color with a bouquet of flowers on the front. Columns are repeated across the front. The top portion or "frog" is removable for filling with water. Flowers are placed in the center and the frog keeps them upright. A beautiful piece of Italian Ceramics!

Collectors Notes: Bough pots are a great example of how people in the 18th century combined practical design with decoration. Because fireplaces were the focal point of a room, leaving them empty and sooty during the summer didn't fit the style of the time. These pots filled with flowers from their gardens brightened up these spaces.

English makers like Wedgwood, Derby, and Spode turned these functional pots into beautiful decorative pieces, using hand-painted landscapes, gold detailing, and classic patterns.

What to Look For

• The "D" Shape: If you look at a bough pot from the top, it looks like a capital "D." The back is completely flat and plain so it can sit flush against a wall or the back of a fireplace. All the detail and decoration is saved for the curved front.

• The Pierced Lid: Finding a vintage or antique bough pot with its original, matching lid is tough. Because the tops were removable for cleaning and changing the water, many were dropped, cracked, or lost over the years.

• A Shift in Style: This design paved the way for other specific flower holders of the era, like bulb pots and tulipieres, which used similar separate holes to hold individual, expensive stems upright.
