An Early Poole Pottery Floral Design Vase

This is a lovely piece of Poole Pottery "Traditional Ware", a style for which the company is probably most famous.

Design and Pattern: The vase features a classic hand-painted floral design, a hallmark of Poole Pottery's "Traditional Ware" range, which was largely influenced by designer Truda Carter starting in the 1920s. The vibrant and stylized flowers and leaves are painted in a cheerful, earthy palette of blues, greens, purples, and rusts. The base glaze appears to be a creamy off-white or light beige, which was a common background for these patterns.

  • Shape: The piece has a squat, rounded body that tapers to a narrow neck and a flared rim. The scalloped detail on the rim adds a charming, decorative touch. This is a very typical shape for Poole's decorative wares from the mid-20th century.

  • Craftsmanship: Like all "Traditional Ware," this vase would have been hand-thrown and hand-painted. The slight variations in the brushstrokes and color saturation are a testament to this unique, artisan process, making each piece one-of-a-kind.
